Malvern Fencer Awarded with Distinguished Scholarship for Engineering Research
Diana Tiburcio, a Malvern native and an accomplished fencer, is the recipient of the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation award, writes Javon Edmonds for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
These prestigious scholarships are awarded to students nationwide who are pursuing research careers in natural science, engineering, and mathematics. This year, scholarships were given out to 413 students.
Tiburcio is a mechanical engineering major with a chemistry minor at Temple University with a 4.0-grade point average.
“That’s one of the most prestigious awards that you can receive in academics,” said Temple athletic director Arthur Johnson. “She’s doing that while competing for us as a fencer, so I’m really proud and happy of the work there.”
In addition to her many achievements in the classroom, the fencer has helped Temple win its 27th straight National Intercollegiate Women’s Fencing Association team title at the NIWFA championships in March.
Tiburcio is also on the executive board of Temple’s chapter of Engineers Without Borders, which is currently working on a project in Ecuador.
Her goal is to complete a Fulbright program at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion in Germany after she earns her bachelor’s degree.
