Every time they hit the field, players on West Chester University women’s lacrosse team are honoring their teammate who they lost unexpectedly, writes Joe Santoliquito for Inside Lacrosse

Julia Rossi passed away on Nov. 14, 2022. Her death came out of nowhere, leaving her teammates heartbroken.

On Friday, the Golden Rams will start the NCAA Division II Tournament as the top team in the country. Their record is 19-0. Their scoring margin is second-best in the nation, as they keep beating their opponents by an average of 11.58 goals per game. The team’s offense is fourth in the nation in scoring and its defense is third. Most importantly, the Golden Rams are the only undefeated team in Division II women’s lacrosse out of over 100 programs nationwide.

One of the main reasons for their success is the unbreakable collective bond they have created after the tragic loss of their friend. Now they play following a simple but impactful mantra: As long as the team keeps on playing, Julia keeps on playing.

“We carry on Julia’s legacy,” said Golden Rams’ coach Ginny Martino.
