Ellen Koopman, who grew up in Philadelphia and attended Germantown Friends School from kindergarten through 12th grade, is an Associate Attorney at Gawthrop Greenwood, a law firm in West Chester.

“My job duties include providing legal advice to governmental clients running local municipalities and private individuals seeking guidance navigating local land use and zoning regulations,” she said. “With all of the development going on in Chester County, it’s an extraordinary time to be doing this kind of work, maintaining the character of the community that makes it so special while growing opportunities for change that can make it even better.”

Koopman, whose first job was doing clerical work for a real estate agent, earned a bachelor’s degree in Law, Letters, and Society from the University of Chicago and her J.D. from Temple University. She credits Sheryl Willson and Susanna Dewese of the Chester County Public Defender’s Office with having the biggest impact on her career.

“They showed me how to lean into your personal strengths to be the best advocate and counselor, how to support other women around you, and how to nourish the non-work parts of your life so that you can keep doing your best,” said Koopman.

Her proudest professional achievements are the wins she secures for her clients and how those wins remove barriers that interfere with their business or life plans.

“Whether it’s winning a DUI trial or securing a zoning variance, the smile and handshake that come after the win are the best,” Koopman said.

Her favorite Chester County restaurant is Split Rail Tavern in West Chester.

Koopman and the rest of the 2023 Class of VISTA Millennial Superstars will be honored at the Awards Reception & Celebration on Thursday, May 18 at Penn State Great Valley.
