Unemployment Rate in Pennsylvania Lower Than a Year Ago

Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate for January was at 4.3 percent, the same as in December, but it was 0.2 percent lower than the January 2022 level. This is according to the preliminary employment situation report for January 2023 released by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry.

At the same time, the U.S. unemployment rate went down by a tenth of a percentage point compared to the 3.4 percent in December. Meanwhile, the national rate is lower by 0.6 percent year over year.

“The January data shows stability in Pennsylvania’s economy,” said L&I Acting Secretary Nancy Walker. “Throughout 2022 and into January of this year, the unemployment rate remained steady between 4.3 and 4.4 percent and jobs are near record high levels.”

The estimated number of residents working or looking for work in Pennsylvania, also known as the civilian labor force, has grown by 11,000 compared to December. The employment count increased by 11,000 while resident unemployment remained unchanged from December.
