When the renovations of the historic Fussell House on Baltimore Pike were completed in 2019 after a two-year process that cost $750,000, there was a lot of excitement about the building’s future, writes Richard Gaw for the Chester County Press

Many expected to see the 200-year-old structure become a proud piece of initiative that would celebrate Kennett Square’s place in the Underground Railroad movement.

However, since then, the home has stood virtually empty. To hopefully change this, the future of the house was discussed by the Kennett Township Board of Supervisors during the Feb. 15 meeting.

Board Chairman Geoffrey Gamble noted that after touring the house recently, he concluded that two floors could be used by the township as soon as 2024.

“The Fussell House has an up-to-date electrical service, heating system and air conditioning system, a brand new roof, and new windows, three bathrooms, and one full kitchen,” said Gamble.

This means that the space could either be rented or utilized by township staff.

Supervisor Scudder Stevens agreed and proposed that due to the tight quarters of the township building, the Fussell House could become the satellite office for a township department.
