Wall Street Journal: Empire State Building Honor Eagles, and New Yorkers are Not Pleased
The top of the Empire State Building shone in green and white lights on Sunday evening to honor the Philadelphia Eagles, and many New Yorkers were not pleased, write Jennifer Calfas and Ginger Adams Otis for The Wall Street Journal.
“Fly @Eagles Fly!” posted the Empire State Building on Twitter shortly after the Birds punched their ticket to the Super Bowl. The post was accompanied by a photo of the New York City landmark in the Eagles’ colors.
Residents of New York, the city of the Eagles’ rival the New York Giants, were not amused. Giants players, politicians, city agencies, and many others quickly shared their dismay.
“How are we going to explain this to all of the other buildings,” wrote the New York City Department of Buildings. “They looked up to you.”
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul added on Monday that “New York State has no control over how @EmpireStateBldg lights its colors,” while the New York City Department of Sanitation called the move “treacherous, traitorous, and unforgivable.”
Meanwhile, the New York Giants simply responded, “I’m just here for the comments.”
Eagles did not publicly comment on the building’s lights.
