Why Quiet Hiring is the Latest Workplace Trend of 2023
Quiet quitting was common in the workplace lexicon of 2022, mainly targeted at Gen Z or Millennial employees who emotionally checked out at their jobs. Others exploited the phrase to describe employees who aim to have a healthy work-life balance. No matter how you describe it, quiet quitting has become the catchphrase apparent of The Great Resignation.
Inversely, a new trend is silently emerging in the workplace. “Quiet hiring” is when companies use already existing employees to fill in open positions, without hiring anyone new, writes Katie Kindelan for ABC News. This could come in the form of promotion, or just piling more work on the employee.
In order to meet goals, instead of a hiring process that takes time and money, companies can shuffle around their employees. Experts say this trend is emerging due to a shortage of job seekers and talent, as well as an imminent recession making some companies uncertain about their fiscal budgets.
