Three Tips on Formatting Your Résumé

In the world of online job applications, the content of your résumé can really make or break your chances. There are many tips to skirt ATS scanners and make your CV pop. But what about formatting? CNBC contributor Gili Malinsky consulted experts on how to properly format your résumé. 

Education on top for recent grads 

Upon graduation, you might not have a lot of work experience. Listing your education first and foremost shows that you are looking for an entry level position.  

Give it a second set of eyes 

To include or not include a summary? Harvard career adviser Gorick Ng says to ask a few of your friends to read your CV. If they say they would consider you a good fit based on first impressions of your resume alone, you probably don’t need a summary.  

Divide into three sections 

Ng also says that your education should take up 20 percent of the page and go to the very top. Your professional experience follows that, taking up about 70 percent of the page. Finally, skills, languages, and interests take up 10 percent of the page at the bottom.
