Chester County adolescents can now get free memberships to the YMCA of Greater Brandywine through the 7th Grade Initiative. Students need to bring a school ID and roster or report card, along with a parent or guardian, to their local branch to get started.

After registering and completing a mandatory wellness orientation, students can use YMCA’s facilities through Aug. 31, 2023. Participants can play in the gyms, work out in the wellness centers and receive discounts for programs, classes, and sports.

More than 1,100 seventh graders take advantage of this free membership each year.

“We think it’s crucial to set the foundation for a healthy lifestyle at a young age,” said YMCA of Greater Brandywine President & CEO Denise Day. “Our 7th Grade Initiative helps kids fall in love with an active way of life. Kids at this age are discovering who they are, and we want to ensure that they’re set up for future success through that active lifestyle.”

As kids face adolescence’s challenges, they’re more likely to begin distancing themselves from formal organizations, friends and family and to experiment with unhealthy behaviors. The 7th Grade Initiative offers an alternative, where they can make new friends while staying active and avoid exposure to those counter-productive behaviors.

Participants will be invited to join the YMCA’s Kindness Initiative this year. They are encouraged to participate in one volunteer service project or two to four volunteer service hours at their YMCA location. A variety of volunteer opportunities are available for students and their families.
