Inked up and looking for a job? Despite what our parents may have told us, tattoos in the workplace are becoming less taboo. Disney and UPS are some of the myriads of companies accepting etched employees. Due to a tight labor market, organizations have loosened restrictions on ink in the workplace, writes Ian Thomas for CNBC.
In April of 2021, both UPS and Disney’s Park division updated their dress code policies to be more accepting of tattoos. The stipulations? They should not contain offensive words or images or be visible on hands, head, neck or the face. Specifically for Disney, visible tattoos should be no larger than an extended hand.
“We’re updating them to not only remain relevant in today’s workplace, but also enable our cast members to better express their cultures and individuality at work,” wrote Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney parks, experiences and products.
Virgin Atlantic took similar measures back in May, allowing uniformed employees to flaunt their ink. The U.S. Army even recently started allowing tattoos on hands and the backs of necks.
The New York City Council introduced a bill that would prohibit employers from discriminating against hiring people with tattoos. However, they can still require that employees cover up the ink.
According to a Rasmussen Reports survey, half of Americans under 40 have tattoos.
