Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square has broken the record for its annual attendance, beating out pre-Covid’s 2019 record by 5 percent for a total of 1.6 million visitors between Oct. 1, 2021 and Sept. 30, 2022, writes Emma Dooling for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

In fiscal year 2019, 1.54 million people visited the Longwood Gardens. Then, Covid hit and halted visitation. However, once festivities picked up — including its Christmas holiday display, seasonal fixtures, and fountain shows — more and more garden-goers were yearning for the outdoors.

“People are looking for authentic, high-value experiences that you can only experience here in the Delaware Valley at these venues. There is just a great thirst to be outside, to be in nature, and to be someplace that’s beautiful,” said Longwood Gardens CEO Paul B. Redman. “And that happened during the pandemic as an act of safety initially, but now people have to have it in their lives.”

Additional statistics include a 22 percent attendance increase to the Christmas display from 2019 and an 18 percent increase in memberships from fiscal year 2021.

Furthermore, construction is ongoing for its $250 million, 17-acre expansion project, “Longwood Reimagined: A New Garden Experience.” The project is halfway to its projected completion in 2024.
