A new collaboration between Philadelphia-based Evil Genius Beer Co. and Auntie Anne’s will create a literal mash-up: pretzels in the beer, writes Michael Klein for the Philadelphia Inquirer

The idea came from one of the Evil Genius founders, Luke Bowen. He grew up near Downingtown Farmers Market, where pretzel giant Auntie Anne’s got its start.

“We reached out to them and said, ‘Hey, we are Evil Genius and we are gigantic fans. Would you be interested in talking to us about a collaboration?’” said Bowen. “Turns out, some people there knew of our company and were fans of our beer, too.”

Soon, the brewery had pretzel dough provided by Auntie Anne’s, which was then added to their latest batch of beer. After a few test rounds, the company had its newest beer, Is Butter a Carb?

The beer went on sale on Aug. 15 via Origlio Beverage. It is also available on draft at Evil Genius, at certain bars, and in cans at distributorships in several states, including Pennsylvania.

Bowen is hoping the beer will last through Oktoberfest, but if it is gone by then, there will be no replacing it.
