After Successfully Qualifying, Downingtown Teen Expected to Be Youngest Participant at U.S. Amateur
Nick Gross, a 15-year-old Downingtown native, recently qualified for the United States Amateur and is expected to be the youngest participant in the elite competition, writes Neil Geoghegan for the Daily Local News.
“There is a good chance I am going to be the youngest,” said Gross. “It is somewhat of a barometer. It does say something, and it’s a good sign.”
A rising junior at Downingtown West will be half the age of many participants when the 122nd U.S. Amateur is staged in New Jersey from August 15 to August 21.
“Once I tee it up, it doesn’t really matter,” said Gross. “I will see a bunch of top-notch college players on up, but I know that my (game) is just as good as theirs.”
Gross qualified on his third attempt. He came close at age 12 in 2019 but he missed by two shots and hit a ball out of bounds. Last year, he missed by three strokes. This year, he is ready to fully show off his skill.
“I am better than I was in 2019, and I’m better than I was in 2021,” he said.
