Square Roots Collective Has Imaginative Plans for 30-Acre Strip of Green Space in Kennett Square
Square Roots Collective, a group committed to advancing the community of Kennett Square so that all residents can thrive, will utilize 30 acres of green space that begins at Kennett High School and extends to Anson B. Nixon Park to construct something greater in terms of aesthetics, environmental cohesiveness, and functionality, writes Richard Gaw for the Chester County Press.
Bordering Race Street to the west and Dalmatian and Walnut streets to the east, the green space is distinguished by its gravel trail that borders property owned by private residents, the borough, the YMCA, and Kennett Fire Company.
The trail will become part of the 14-mile Kennett Greenway. The multi-year project to repurpose this green space, temporarily named “Red Clay Park,” aims to bring the community together through its ecological restoration and recreational opportunities.
Square Roots Collective staked an $800,000 investment to begin development plans, but everything is still in the planning stage and will require many permits and approvals.
“One of the exciting parts about this project is that we haven’t yet formed what the amenities of the park will be, all of which will be determined by the community and how they want this space to be used,” said Christina Norland, executive director of the Kennett Trails Alliance.
