Chester County residents receive the largest annual Social Security payments in Pennsylvania, according to a recent data analysis by SmartAsset.

The county ranked first in the Keystone State in 2021 with an average annual Social Security income of $23,239. This gave it an annual Social Security Index of 83.54, which placed it among the Top 50 nationwide at No. 33.

However, despite having the highest payouts, Chester County is not among the counties where these benefits will cover the highest portion of post-tax living expenses.

It ranked No. 45 on the list of places where Social Security goes furthest in Pennsylvania and No. 1,404 in the country.

The reason for such a low placement is that Chester County’s cost of living, which, at $23,464, is the second-highest in the state, behind only Pike County.

Overall, the payouts can go further in Pennsylvania than in some other parts of the U.S., because it is not taxed by the state.
