West Chester May Soon Be Getting Another Park
The West Chester Planning Commission has unanimously voted to recommend to borough council the installation of a tree-lined linear park, writes Bill Rettew for the Daily Local News.
The commission’s goal is for the linear park to be developed at the intersection of Gay and Adams streets, across from Borough Hall.
It seeks to use the park to beautify the borough and attract businesses to the area. According to the commission’s Jeff Beitel, the eastern gateway corridor needs natural enhancement, as it is “visually unappealing.”
The proposal details a slightly curved path along the Gay Street sidewalk. The curved line of streetscape will include trees, plants, rain gardens, and more.
This pedestrian-friendly streetscape will improve walkability. Moreover, educational signs placed along the pathway will include knowledge of the benefits of the streetscape.
Councilman Brian McGinniss fully supports the idea of a linear park.
“This is a great project that creates a more welcoming atmosphere as you are entering West Chester,” said McGinnis. “It’s great for the environment, and it beautifies the streetscape.”
Officials say construction would only take about nine months. However, the necessary funds of $200,000 could take years to be collected.
