As mask restrictions ease and vaccinations become more prominent, families like Cara Finn’s in Ambler try to find the “right” way to host their child’s birthday party, writes Alina Dizik for the Wall Street Journal

What used to be a chance for parents, children, and friends to celebrate in a fun-filled environment is now an exercise in caution.

When Finn sent out invitations for her six-year-old’s party at an arcade, she included that COVID precautions and case updates will be announced closer to the event.

Setting up a party, no matter the number of intended guests, is now something that takes more thoughtful planning, with many hosts like Finn speaking to guests beforehand to determine how to proceed.

“If precaution level impacts your RSVP — please reach out and we’ll chat,” wrote Finn, who was unsure if families would attend.

Like many parents, Finn did not want other families to think she was inconsiderate or overly strict when it came to celebrating birthdays in the middle of a pandemic. It was hard to find the right way to invite families without sparking unease.
