Hurricane Ida took its toll on the Hill Girt Farm’s market, home of SIW Vegetables, but the community rallied and helped get the market back on its feet, writes Ed Williams for Main Line Today.

The farm is located near the Brandywine River in Chadds Ford.

“Thirty-six years of buildings, coolers, and wagons were wiped away in about a 10-hour period, leaving nothing but an empty parking lot,” said H.G. Haskell.

The Haskell family has owned the farm at 4317 Creek Road since the early 1900s, growing fruits, vegetables, and flowers.

“We farm about 50 acres of fruits and veggies,” said Haskell. “The entire farm is more than 700 acres, most of which has conservation easements to protect the land forever.”

A CSA that’s open April to October offers food shares to the public in season and sells its produce at a farm stand and at local farm markets.

A barn is the summer and fall site of SIW’s popular Field to Fork dinners.

Haskell said neighbors showed up within hours of the flood to help. The stand was restored within a month.

SIW Vegetables continues to partner with local restaurants and the dinners will continue.
