Former WCASD Offices Could Graduate into an ALDI
West Chester could soon become home to a new ALDI supermarket constructed at the Spellman Building. The Paoli Pike site is the former home to the administrative offices of the West Chester Area School District. Bill Rettew checked out the development for the Daily Local News.
The board of supervisors will discuss and possibly approve the subdivision and land development plan during its meeting tonight.
If approved, the 26,396-square-foot grocery store would have to compete for shoppers with the ACME located nearby. In addition to the store, the 16.98-acre lot would have a restaurant with drive-through service and a retail/restaurant building.
The owner has considered giving the township about 10 acres of the property where Goose Creek runs and regularly floods Montgomery Avenue to the west. Chris Bashore, township manager, said that property could be used for a “potential remediation project” to address this flooding.
However, the township is still deciding on whether it wants to accept the offer, owing to possible contamination. If it agrees to take the land, the township would be responsible for the cost of any clean-up.
According to supervisor Ashley Gagne, reactions from residents on the potential ALDI supermarket have been positive.
