A group of climate demonstrators gathered at Vanguard’s headquarters in Malvern on Friday, just ahead of the United Nations’ global climate change summit, to pressure the investment giant to act faster on fossil fuels, writes Catherine Dunn for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The campaign was organized by Sunrise Project. It follows up on the demonstrations that took place in front of Vanguard’s headquarters in June and September.

Dubbed “Vanguard’s Very Big Problem,” the campaign takes aim at Vanguard over its fossil fuel investments as climate change-related risks grow more urgent.

According to Sunrise Project’s Tanya Kar, Vanguard, which has more than $7 trillion in assets under management, has been silent on important climate change-related issues. It is also one of the largest investors in coal in the world.

“That time for them to be flying under the radar is over,” said Kar.

In response, a Vanguard spokesperson cited the firm’s involvement in the Net Zero Asset Managers initiative. Further, it noted its intent to “continue to advocate on the risks related to climate change within our engagements with companies, industry regulators, and policymakers, and through aligned organizations and initiatives.”
