Two jazz vocalists, two generations of music, and two very different sounds will come together for one night of unforgettable music on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 7 PM at the Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center.

Sound too good to be true? Not when it’s a special evening with esteemed singers Sara Michaels and Sharon Sable performing “More Than Just Your Jazz Standards.”

For one night only, these two sirens will join forces to collaborate on songs by Gladys Knight, The Beatles, James Taylor, Cindy Lauper, Carole King, Elton John, and Stevie Wonder, as well as jazz classics by Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Edith Piaf, Louis Armstrong, and more. However, before their dual performance, each will be treating the audience to an exclusive solo performance featuring original music from her latest collection of music.

Sable, who found herself immersed in the teen pop world as a young recording artist at the age of 17, has recorded with, and for, many of the era’s pop/R&B heavyweights such as Pink, Babyface, Mandy Moore, and Boyz II Men. Now, she incorporates her pop influences into her jazz performances and is recognized as one of the region’s most respected interpreters of song with sold-out appearances throughout the East Coast.

“We are two different generations, with two very different styles and sounds to our voices,” said Michaels, who hosts “The Jazz Cocktail Hour” at Uptown! “Sable’s voice is pitch-perfect — sweet and clear with delicate dynamics and quite intoxicating — whereas my voice has a soulful, gutsy style with a rich, lower range that is quite a contrast from Sable’s. Both can tell a story in song so differently, and when we sing together, it’s oh so fun!”

Performing alongside Sable and Michaels will be The Terry Klinefelter Quintet, featuring WCU’s Dr. Terry Klinefelter, E. Shawn Qaissaunee, and Harry “Butch” Reed.
