West Chester Area School District Juggles ‘Polar Opposite Opinions’ on School Mask Mandate
The West Chester Area School District is considering its future steps as parents across the state ramp up pressure on districts over school mask requirements, write Maddie Hanna and Melanie Burney for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
“It’s like the whole pandemic: There’s always two polar opposite opinions on it,” said WCASD Superintendent Jim Scanlon.
The district has already dropped outdoor masking requirements, but it is still waiting to change the policy on indoor masking until Gov. Tom Wolf’s administration lifts the state’s order. The order expires June 28 or when full vaccination rates for Pennsylvania adults reach 70 percent.
Policy pushback on masking is not universal. “It isn’t so much the kids,” said Scanlon. “It’s the parents.”
Pennsylvania health officials are continuing the mandate for schools to enforce masking. Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends masks in schools. The advisory stems from younger children who are unvaccinated for reasons that include their ages.
