Phoenixville High School graduate Andrew Deery, a trailblazing chef whose acclaimed restaurant Majolica helped trigger the borough’s restaurant revival, is now helping others beat addiction at nearby Manor of Hope, writes Michael Bradley for Main Line Today.

Deery closed the doors of his bistro on Dec. 7, 2019, exactly 15 years from the day he opened it. Although Majolica was doing well and received praise from food critics, the chef felt it was time to move on.

“It was ultimately my most rewarding professional experience,” he said.

A month later, he took the position of Culinary Director at Manor of Hope, the renowned addiction support program. There, he prepares meals for residents, but also helps them develop kitchen skills while advocating for meals that properly fuel the body and aid recovery.

Another therapeutic aspect of his role incudes helping the residents maintain the organic gardens. The results of their work become part of the daily meal plans.

Deery, 50, is more than five years sober himself and a certified family recovery specialist.

“It’s a good source of pride for me,” he said.
