Ice Cream Socials in the Navy Inspired Brothers to Open Shop in Malvern
Scoops ’N Smiles, an ice cream shop in Malvern, is run by brothers and Navy veterans Akain Rowland and Yusef Jackson, who loved water ice while growing up in West Philadelphia, writes Vittoria Woodill for CBS Philly.
Rowland and Jackson were inspired by the simple pleasure provided by ice cream socials while in the Navy.
“There would be an alleyway, like, where you serve all the food, would be tubs of ice cream,” said Rowland.
The shop offers 20 flavors of ice cream and a plethora of tasty water ice options. The community happily visited and enjoyed everything the shop had to offer for five years, but then the pandemic hit.
“You turn, you’re not there anymore,” he said. “It’s like no people, no walking, no riding bikes.”
The two business partners were planning to open a West Chester location, but COVID-19 put those plans on hold.
After the initial shutdowns, though, the partners decided to go ahead with their plans. Now, both locations are open and are delighting customers with their tasty treats.
