Kennett Square-based Genesis HealthCare, one of the state’s largest nursing home operators, has made significant progress in controlling the coronavirus spread in its facilities, writes Harold Brubaker for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

“We have seen a clear flattening of the curve over the last two weeks,” said Richard Feifer, Genesis’s Chief Medical Officer.

The company runs 361 facilities in 25 states – more than 30 of them are in the Philadelphia region – and has already recorded at least one case of COVID-19 among patients in 187 of its locations. Currently, 133 nursing homes have self-imposed admissions bans, down from 233 facilities.

“Each day, we are learning that others can come off of that selectively,” said Feifer. “So that trend is improving.”

The company also did exceedingly well during state and federal inspections of pandemic-related infection-control practices. Out of 294 inspections, 95 percent found no deficiencies.
