Malvern-based Siemens Healthineers USA is hoping to have its first batch of laboratory-based tests that detect the presence of COVID-19 antibodies in blood available for use in May, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The test is designed to give a clear view of the progression of COVID-19 in patients. It will also identify individuals who were infected with the virus and have developed an immune response, even if they were never diagnosed with the disease or have exhibited no symptoms.

The first one million tests should be available before the end of this month, according to Deepak Nath, president of laboratory diagnostics at Siemens Healthineers. The company is also planning to expand its manufacturing capacity to ensure that there are 25 million tests available for June.

The blood test will be especially useful to test employees once businesses reopen, said Nath.

“It will show whether or not you have an active infection at the time of the test,” he said.

Additionally, the tests will help doctors determine if people who have developed antibodies can be infected by COVID-19 for a second time.
