The Philadelphia Business Journal hosted a virtual conversation – entitled “Straight Talk: A Look at How the Region’s Economic Development Officials Are Tackling the Pandemic” – on Thursday about the efforts of these organizations to work together and aid businesses and nonprofits during these challenging times.

Officials from the region’s economic development agencies outlined both local and national programs, discussed how businesses can navigate these unprecedented challenges, and provided an outlook on new initiatives in the works. They also looked at the future of the economy as stay-at-home orders begin to get lifted.

One of the officials was Mike Grigalonis, the Chief Operating Officer of the Chester County Economic Development Council, who offered insight into how the CCEDC is adjusting to the times and working with local businesses to address their needs.

“The focus has been on working capital,” he said. “Even before the pandemic, financing has been a big part of our core. But now, we’ve converted our non-lending staff to help us process the applications (for COVID-19 relief) we’ve been getting.

“The scale of this pandemic is massive, and it’s creating delays and frustrations, specifically with the Paycheck Protection Program, so we want to be responsive and empathetic.”

Grigalonis was asked what advice he would give a business at this time.

“Be a squeaky wheel,” he said. “Be persistent and nudge your way in line to take advantage of these programs.”
