SEPTA’s fare-restructuring proposal has some good news and some bad news for riders in the Philadelphia area, writes Kennedy Rose for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

According to the proposal, SEPTA plans to increase Travel Wallet fare to $2.50 while also offering one free transfer to riders. Previously, each transfer cost $1. Under the new system, riders would pay $2.50 for a ride and one transfer.

“This change will allow riders to use the SEPTA system as a true network — encouraging those who currently stay on a bus longer to avoid paying a transfer fee to use connections that will speed-up their trips,” said SEPTA.

The proposed changes still need to be approved by the transit system’s board. A public comment period will commence on April 10 with 10 public hearings scheduled to take place across the region. The full plan will be posted online on March 20.

Other highlights of the restructuring plan include a $3 increase of Monthly TransPasses and a $1 increase of Weekly TransPasses. Also, cash fare will remain unchanged at $2.50 and base fares for riders with disabilities will remain the same.
