Market uncertainty coupled with a return to normalcy after years of high activity resulted in a downtick in mergers and acquisitions transactions across Central and Southeastern Pennsylvania in 2019, according to a new report by RKL LLP, a professional services firm with an office in Exton.

RKL’s 2019 Regional Transaction Report also found that Suburban Philadelphia, including Chester County, accounted for the majority of transactions over the past year, resulting in a higher proportion of deals than in prior years. The Suburban Philadelphia market saw a total of 142 transactions in 2019, with private equity backed and publicly traded companies accounting for the vast majority of acquisitions by companies in that market. That’s compared to 178 total transactions in 2018, and 185 in 2017.

In 2019, private equity activity was on the rise in Central and Southeastern Pennsylvania, as shown by key findings in the report, including:

• 111 transactions across the region involved a private equity or venture capital buyer.
• 85 buyers were either private equity investors or sponsor-backed companies.
• 18 percent of transactions involving a target in the region included a private equity buyer, compared to nine to 14 percent in the three years prior.
