PennDOT is ready to roll out the next phase of its $125 million project to ease congestion along the always-busy Schuylkill Expressway with 73 digital variable speed signs, writes Natalie Kostelni for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The signs will be placed between the Pennsylvania Turnpike in King of Prussia and Route 1 on the Montgomery County/Philadelphia border. The project will cost $8.6 million.

During the initial testing, the signs will be static. Afterward, PennDOT will start using an algorithm that will monitor weather and various other traffic conditions to adjust the posted speeds on the signs in real time to alert the motorists of any upcoming issues.

The idea is to have drivers slow their vehicles down in time to avoid potential fender benders and to keep the traffic moving, even if it is moving slowly.

“This is our first in a series of strategies that we’re implementing,” said Brad Rudolph, PennDOT spokesman. “It’s not going to be magic overnight. This is going to help with rear-end collisions and provide alerts.”
