Despite Rocky Start, Journalist Bonds with Coatesville-Born Grandson of Triple Crown Winner

Not even a concussion and five broken ribs prevented one journalist from bonding with Brahma Fear, a Chester County-raised grandson of Triple Crown winner Secretariat, writes George Mallet for KIMT-TV.

Fourteen years ago, Mallet was writing about Brahma Fear, a new foal born from Committee Boat at a farm in Coatesville. The horse immediately captured the journalist’s heart.

Years later, after Brahma had left the racing circuit, Mallet decided to buy the horse. However, one of his early riding experiences ended with him being thrown off the horse while at full gallop.

“My head took a lot of the impact, and I saw a big chunk of sod, knocked loose by the brim of my helmet, fly past me,” said Mallet. “I rolled to my left and felt a rush of pain shoot through my rib cage all the way to my left shoulder.”

Still, this did not discourage him, and after he recovered, he was back on the horse. This time, the experience was completely different, and the two hit it off, completing the bonding process that had begun years before at a Coatesville farm.
