A proposal to build a four-story, 120-unit luxury apartment building at the site of Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream & Yogurt in Berwyn Village is being met with opposition from local residents, writes Linda Stein for Main Line Media News.

Developers Todd Pohlig and David Della Porta have teamed up on the project, which has applied for variances to develop the building dubbed Berwyn Square. The beloved ice cream shop would stay as the first-floor tenant and its customers would get a chance to eat the ice cream in a pleasant plaza instead of a parking lot.

However, to make the building a reality, the developers need zoning waivers. This includes zoning relief to allow the structure to be 49 instead of 42 feet tall.

Some residents are hoping those requests will be denied. Among their issues with the developers’ plans, they cite increased traffic and the overall effect it would have on the character of their neighborhood.

“There are plenty of appropriate, reasonable, and attractive uses for the property rather than an oversized building,” said Lawyer Joseph Kohn, who represents some of the neighbors.
