As one of the crucial battlegrounds in the next presidential election, Pennsylvania presents a challenge for both President Donald Trump and the Democrats, writes Dan Balz for The Washington Post.

In the 2016 election, Hillary Clinton held her own in Philadelphia and its suburbs, as well as in Pittsburgh, but lost votes nearly everywhere else compared to Barack Obama in 2012. Trump, meanwhile, gained more votes than Mitt Romney nearly everywhere.

According to Terry Madonna, Director of the Center for Politics and Public Affairs at Franklin & Marshall College, Trump could come out victorious in Pennsylvania once again.

“But to do it, he’s got to win those rural and small towns with significant turnout and/or find a way not to lose the Philly ’burbs by a larger percentage than he did against Clinton,” said Madonna.

David Urban, a political adviser to the president and his campaign, also predicts Trump voters will be out in droves in 2020.

However, former Gov. Ed Rendell is bullish about Democrats’ chances in 2020. He believes voters who seemed to abandon Clinton at the end will be back in full force.
