Mighty Writers, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit that offers free reading and writing programs for children, is opening a Kennett Square location in October, writes Sabrina Vourvoulias for Generocity.

The nonprofit already has centers in eight Philadelphia-area neighborhoods. The latest addition is a reflection of the growing Latino population in southern Chester County. Kennett Square is 49 percent Latino, while the three adjacent towns – Avondale, Toughkenamon, and West Grove – are 59 percent, 58 percent, and 35 percent, respectively.

“In the face of so much fear-mongering and anti-immigrant sentiment,” said Tim Whitaker, the executive director of Mighty Writers, “it’s especially critical that immigrant kids learn to think clearly and express themselves with clarity.”

Sara Dickens-Trillo will be the bilingual program manager at the Kennett Square location. She is on the boards of Casa Guanajuato and LCH, both of which operate out of Kennett Square.

The program at the new location will be entirely bilingual. It will start with Girl Power Poetry classes for young girls and Girl Power Futures classes for teenagers. Also, there will be monthly Bilingual Family Write Nights.

“This program is going to help our children in so many aspects of their lives,” said Dickens-Trillo.
