Businesses continue to prosper in West Chester and have an exciting future ahead, according to a new report from the Business Improvement District (BID), writes Bill Rettew for the Daily Local News.

The 2018 annual report was presented to Borough Council last week by BID Executive Director Malcom Johnstone.

“In 2018, West Chester continued to see a record number of businesses downtown, reduced crime, and a robust social media outreach,” the report states.

During his presentation, Johnstone reported several achievements, including the borough hosting the annual statewide downtown revitalization conference.

Additionally, BID grew its media outreach to 2.6 million, the Eli Kahn Development Corporation began construction on a new office building at 44 West, and Denise Polk and Meghan Fogarty were recognized for their Community Greening efforts.

Finally, the borough was able to secure a “recycling” $200,000 grant-to-loan for the Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center. This will be used by another borough partner for economic development once it is paid off.

Johnstone reported 58 new businesses opened last year, up from 44 in 2017.
