Local Taxes Account for a Whopping 83.8 Percent of This Chester County School District’s Budget

Local tax revenues accounted for only 57.6 percent of the $30.3 billion received by Pennsylvania’s 499 school districts in the 2017-18 school year, writes Eugene Tauber for The Allentown Morning Call.

In the Great Valley School District, however, local taxes accounted for 83.8 percent of its budget. That put the school district behind only Lower Merion (85.1 percent) in Montgomery County and New Hope-Solebury (84.2 percent) in Bucks County among Pennsylvania school districts with the highest percentage of their budgets generated from local taxes.

Great Valley spent $22,840.91 per student: $19,145 of that came from local taxes, $3,519 from state taxes, and $176 from federal taxes.

Also in Chester County, the Tredyffrin-Easttown School District received 82.8 percent of its budget from local tax revenues, while the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District received 81.4 percent.

Meanwhile, 10 school districts in Pennsylvania received 20 percent or less of their budgets from local taxes. Among them is Reading in nearby Berks County at 17.3 percent.
