Level 13 eSports Gaming Center in West Chester erupted in shouts and cheers as a local teenager became the winner of the first Fortnite World Cup in New York City and its massive $3 million prize, writes Jeff Chirico for 6ABC.

“Everybody started screaming,” said Jude Freymoyer, 11, of Downingtown.

The win by the 16-year-old Kyle Giersdorf from Pottsgrove took many by surprise.

“I was shocked because I thought it would be someone in their 20s,” said Ash Zolomij, 15, of West Chester.

According to Kevin Mash, Level 13’s owner, Giersdorf could be looking at a long and lucrative career as a professional gamer. Some earn millions of dollars a year from playing while others watch from home.

Playing video games to earn money is growing in popularity. Mash’s daughter, Rachel, even uses the potential earnings as an argument when her mother presses her to spend more time outside.

“I was asking her in the car if she’d rather me play soccer or play video games where I can win a lot of money,” said 11-year-old Rachel. “She didn’t answer.”
