The first-ever Drag Queen Storytime recently hosted by Tredyffrin Public Library created very little controversy and was a lot of fun for visitors both big and small, writes Caroline O’Halloran for SAVVY Main Line.

Following a previous, controversial performance at the Haverford Free Library by Balena Canto, also known as Matthew Maisono, the staff at the Tredyffrin Library had made extensive preparations for the event. This included getting the board of trustees’ blessing and putting the local police on alert.

Luckily, none of it turned out to be required. The story hour was just like any other hosted by the library, although this one was led by a large man in a glittering gown and shiny stilettos.

The room was filled with 82 people, including children, parents, staff, and township and library officials, and only two people showed up to protest the appearance.

The stories and songs performed by Canto were also pre-approved by the library, and all championed acceptance, inclusion, and diversity – values that parents hoped their children would embrace.
