Former students unveiled a plaque recognizing the end of segregation in West Chester’s elementary schools at the site of the former Gay Street School, writes Bill Rettew for the Daily Local News.

Ronald Dorsey, Greg Porter, and James Bell pulled off the sheet to uncover the plaque together, after working for more than a year to make the installation a reality.

Funding for the plaque was secured with the help of Mayor Dianne Herrin. She spoke to an audience of around 50 at the outdoor ceremony.

“We are all here to communicate a really important story,” said Herrin, “the struggle for racial equality.”

Florence Sechler Miller, who wrote A Legacy of Learning: The History of the West Chester Area Schools, discussed “the black community’s determination to ensure an equal education for their children, not only at Gay Street but also in high school.”
