New Garden Township officials will hold a series of public meetings to decide on the best use for the St. Anthony In The Hills property it acquired last year for $1.5 million, according to a report from the Daily Local News.

The 137.5-acre property just north of Somerset Lake near the Delaware border has been a retreat and recreational facility for many years.  It was originally created as a public park by the late St. Anthony’s pastor, the Rev. Roberto Balducelli, and has also been used as a sanctuary for Wilmington’s inner-city children.

“There will be public meetings and a master site plan committee, in which residents of the township can participate,” said New Garden Township Manager Tony Scheivert.

The property already has several amenities, including a huge swimming pool, an amphitheater with more than 2,000 seats, a miniature golf course, and bocce courts.

According to Scheivert, when completed, at least 50 percent of the property will be open space. However, it might take five to ten years to decide on the best use for the remaining space.
