Located in the heart of America’s Garden Capital (36 gardens within 30 miles), Chanticleer Garden is the only Main Line Estate that is still open to the public. It was named one of North America’s Most Beautiful Secret Gardens by National Geographic Traveler magazine, perhaps because of the Alice-in-Wonderland nature of the estate. There’s a charming elevated walkway and gorgeous secluded corners like the Tea Cup Garden, Ruins Garden, Bells Woodland, and more.

For another family outing, head for Tyler Arboretum, where children can walk through life-size tree houses and take selfies in a birdhouse. Its new summer-long exhibit is “Gateways to Nature” and features the work of 13 artists who have “framed” the gardens, meadows, and forest areas in rare and inspirational ways.

Kayaking and canoeing are just two of many popular activities at The John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge. Established in 1972, it was America’s first Urban Wildlife Refuge and is one of only two refuges in the state. This amazing ecosystem is nestled along the Delaware River, bursting with all types of flora and fauna that thrive and flourish under a spider-like web of superhighways and international air flights arriving and departing from PHL. Hike a 3.7-mile loop trail that is used for walking, trail running, nature trips, and canoeing. (Must bring your own kayak or canoe.) Entry is free, and trails are accessible year-round, from sunrise to sunset. Check out cool exhibits at the Visitor Center, which is open from 9 AM-4 PM. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash.

For soccer fans, nothing says “summertime” like a seat in the stands for a Philadelphia Union match when there’s an Eastern Division championship on the line and a championship-worthy view overlooking one the biggest and busiest rivers in the state. It’s the perfect juxtaposition of the smooth, sultry motion of Delaware River with the fevered pitch of the cheers and stomps of 15,000 Union fans! Tickets are available for July 6 against Orlando City SC and July 20 against the Chicago Fire, both at Talen Energy Stadium on the waterfront.
