Dunwoody Village is a continuing care retirement community that has offered residents high-quality residential living, healthcare, and rehabilitation since 1974. The general public is always welcome to tour the Village at its picturesque wooded setting in Newtown Square, where it can also shop at two popular venues that are available to both residents and visitors.

The ReSale Shop, offering items that are donated from residents who are downsizing at the Village, or from families of those who are recently deceased, is run by Didi Rieger, a Dunwoody resident for four years. The shop is open on Mondays from 9 AM-12:30 PM, and all proceeds go to providing programs and entertainment for the residents.

“We get everything, including clothing, jewelry, household items, luggage, sports items, and furniture,” said Rieger. “Just picture what can accumulate in an apartment for so many years.”

According to Rieger, items of furniture are particularly popular and are available 24/7 in a designated area on the lower level of the facility. Residents and visitors can inquire about each piece by calling the phone number listed with each item.

The ReSale Shop does not advertise, except for a sign that is visible along West Chester Pike near the entrance to the Village. Items not sold are eventually donated to groups like the Second Mile or Goodwill.

“What keeps me and the six volunteer members of the team going is that the ReSale program is very well received,” said Rieger. “It’s a major process when someone downsizes, but it’s nice to have a place where someone’s things can be offered to others at a reasonable price.”

The Dunwoody Gift Shop is the other shopping alternative available to residents and the visiting public. Marion Lee is employed by Dunwoody as the buyer and manager of the shop and is helped by 8-10 residents who volunteer throughout the week. Most items available in the shop are for the convenience of the residents who may not be able to leave the Village on a regular basis, or for those who run out of a particular item before their next trip to the local shopping center.

“We have an entire wall of necessities like toothpaste, aspirin, cough drops, and razors that you could find in a drug store,” said Lee. “We also carry soap, dishwashing detergent and reasonably priced bracelets, earrings, and necklaces.”

Lee is especially proud of the shop’s popular greeting cards that cost only a dollar and are updated each holiday, as well as the handmade goods from designer Danny K. that sell out quickly.

“The women are crazy about his handbags, wallets, and luggage that I purchase when he comes to Philadelphia for the craft show,” she said. Jackets and pashmina scarves are among the wearable items available as well.

For those who need something for the grandkids, the store keeps a good selection of toys for purchase. And for those with a sweet tooth, an account with Christopher Chocolates of Newtown Square always keeps tasty items in stock. An added treat for Dunwoody Village staff and resident volunteers is a 10 percent discount on any item in the shop.

Lee says the shop has become a meeting place for some residents after dinner on the two nights the shop stays open late, and she is proud of the service her shop provides for residents and guests alike.

“It’s nice when people come in for an interview who are considering moving to Dunwoody and see the shop and all it has to offer,” said Lee. “They see it as a real convenience.”

The Dunwoody Gift Shop is open Monday through Friday from 12-3:30 PM and Monday and Wednesday nights from 6-7:30 PM.
