Dr. Erum Ilyas, a dermatologist based in Wayne, has launched AmberNoon, an innovative clothing line that gives sun protection year-round, writes Trang Do for CBS Philly.

According to Dr. Ilyas, her clothing provides as much or more sun protection as 50-plus SPF sunscreen, while the average t-shirt only has a SPF or UPF of three or four.

“No one is really thinking about everyday sun exposure,” she said. “So the thought was what if we came up with a way to make wearing sunscreen as easy as getting dressed.”

Dr. Ilyas, who does almost 7,000 skin exams a year, started developing AmberNoon in 2016 after noticing that incidences of skin cancer were rising. The goal was to design clothes that were both stylish and offered protection from sun exposure without using harsh chemicals. Instead, Dr. Ilyas achieves the protective factor through her intricate weaving of the fabrics.

The woman’s line where pieces range in price from $75 to $200 has now become such a success that she recently added accessories and started work on lines for men and children.

Dr. Ilyas is also preparing for the grand opening of her flagship store in Wayne on May 11.
