Earlier this month, Michael Sells of Oxford staged a marathon gaming session on Twitch, the livestreaming video platform, to raise money for charity, writes Jane Bellmyer for The Cecil (Md.) Whig.

Twitch is a subsidiary of Amazon where players can stream their gaming sessions, while viewers watch and communicate with them through chat rooms.

Known as BulletDozer911 in the online gaming community, Sells was planning to do a 24-hour stream, but his computer crashed after 19 hours. However, he still managed to achieve his $2,000 goal.

In fact, he did so much promotion for the April 12 stream that he had raised $525 before the livestream had even begun.

“When my stream went down, I had raised $1,615 of the $2,000 we were trying to raise,” he said.

The money was raised through the charity website Extra Life for Children’s Miracle Network hospitals. Throughout the session, Sells invited gamers and fans to make donations.

After his computer crashed, Sells went to bed. He woke up to discover that an anonymous donor had given the $400 he needed to reach his goal.

Now, he’s planning another session.

“In November, I will do another charity stream,” he said.
