In growing numbers, the region’s baby boomers have been selling their homes and moving into rental apartments in the Philadelphia suburbs, writes Terri Akman for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Eleanor and Chuck Adam sold their house in Garnet Valley three years ago to rent an apartment at Riverworks in Phoenixville. While about half the size of their previous home, the new renters have found many advantages to their new living arrangement.

“It’s total flexibility; we worry about nothing,” said Eleanor, 67.

They also take advantage of the wealth of amenities offered at the complex, including the doggy spa for their two pooches, the swimming pool, and various social activities.

The couple is a part of a growing trend that saw rentals among 55-and-older households in the Philadelphia metro area increase by 36 percent from 2008 to 2017. Most of them stay in the same community to be near their jobs, family, and friends.

“They want to downsize and live a maintenance-free lifestyle,” said Charles Elliott, president of Toll Brothers Apartment Living, the owner of Riverworks. “Being able to rent in the same community they owned homes in lets them keep their social networks.”
