Berwyn native Jake Cohen, a Conestoga High School graduate and professional basketball player in the Israeli Premier League, recently led the Israeli national team during its campaign to qualify for this summer’s FIBA World Cup in China, writes Josh Halickman for The Jerusalem Post.

Israel ultimately fell short of qualifying with a 5-7 record. Cohen, a 6-foot-10 power forward and two-time Southern Conference Player of the Year at Davidson College, led the Israelis with 16 points in their final qualifying game, a 97-76 loss to Serbia.

As a senior at Conestoga in 2008-09, Cohen was named Central League MVP after averaging 17.6 points, 11 rebounds, and five blocked shots per game.

Cohen went undrafted in 2013 but competed for the Phoenix Suns in that year’s NBA Summer League. He now plays professionally for Maccabi Tel Aviv, which Cohen helped carry to the 2018 Israeli League Championship with 18 points, five rebounds, and four steals in the title game against Hapoel Holon.
