The Wharton Esherick Museum in Malvern is one of the best works on the East Coast of renowned architect Louis Kahn, writes Melissa Romero for Curbed Philadelphia.

Kahn established himself as a prolific architect, despite his relatively short career, by designing everything from monumental buildings to public housing developments. Archives at the University of Pennsylvania hold more than 6,000 of his drawings. While many were not built, those that were cemented his place as one of the world’s most influential modern architects.

Wharton Esherick, one of the most prominent sculptors and furniture designers of his time, was a close friend of Kahn’s. While designing his Malvern studio and home, he asked Kahn to help design his workshop.

Their competing visions are obvious in the final result with Esherick’s trademark, curved details complemented by Kahn’s angular walls. They also worked together on the home of Esherick’s niece in Chestnut Hill.

The Wharton Esherick Museum has been designated a National Historic Landmark and is open to visitors. However, the workshop on the grounds of the museum is a private residence for Wharton’s daughter and her husband.
