The Movie Tavern theater chain, which has a location in Exton, has been sold to Marcus Theatres, writes Donna Rovins for the Daily Local News.

Marcus Theatres announced its intent to purchase the Movie Tavern chain, known for its in-theater dining concept and luxury seating, from VSS Southern Theatres in November last year. The purchase price was valued at around $139 million.

Marcus Theatres originally considered acquiring the Movie Tavern chain when it was up for sale six years ago, but then opted out.

“We had dipped our toes into the water before, and since then, we have continued to build on our experience,” said Rolando B. Rodriguez, CEO of Marcus Theatres.

The theaters will now be known as “Movie Tavern by Marcus,” which adds the Marcus Theatres identity to the established Movie Tavern name.

Within a few days of the sale, Rodriguez had visited Movie Tavern properties, including the Exton location. He said that the Pennsylvania properties are “good producing properties.”

“We believe they are in the upper third of performance for the Movie Tavern circuit,” he said.
