Local School District a Paradigm for the Problems with School Funding

According to school officials, Gov. Tom Wolf’s new spending plan that would add $665,000 in state aid to the Pottstown School District’s budget is not enough, writes Maddie Hanna for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Over the last eight years, Pottstown has faced growing financial issues. These were exacerbated when the district lost $1 million in annual tax revenue two years ago following the sale of a for-profit hospital.

This is why the proposed addition of $665,000 in state aid to its $62 million budget was not met with celebration.

“In the overall grand picture of putting our students on a fair and equitable platform with students across Pennsylvania, there’s a long way to go,” said school board member John Armato.

Pottstown School District is one of several struggling districts despite funding increases under Gov. Wolf. The main reason is Pennsylvania’s reliance on property taxes to pay for schools.

“We have cut everywhere you can possibly cut,” said Beth Yoder, an art teacher at Pottstown High School and president of the district’s teachers union. “And we’re just still struggling.”
