Local High School Community Searches for Answers Amidst Suicide Crisis
The Downingtown East High School community is searching for answers after it endured four suicides in 11 months, writes Claire Sasko for Philadelphia magazine.
There was a school board meeting earlier this month to discuss the issue. Almost 20 community members took the microphone in front of a packed room to express their distress and frustration to school administrators over the situation.
One of the speakers was a recent graduate of Downingtown East, who presented a Change.org petition that calls attention to the mental health crisis. The petition was signed by more than 7,500 people in just 22 hours.
She stressed that her goal was “to be able to open a conversation with members of the Downingtown School District board on how we can effectively educate students about mental health.”
Other speakers, which included both parents and students, blamed the issue on academic pressure.
